Blackmagic Design has announced a significant price reduction for its range network storage (opens in a new tab) solutions.
Aimed at film and television professionals such as video editors, colorists, sound engineers and VFX artists, the Blackmagic Cloud Store appliances allow multiple users to quickly share media files – “The size of a Hollywood feature film”, the company says – for editing, visual effects work and other post-production processes.
developer behind DaVinci Resolve (opens in a new tab)one of best video editing software (opens in a new tab) in the market cited supply chain recovery and cheaper high-speed flash memory components as reasons for price reductions of up to $7,000 on high-end models.
A creative solution in the cloud
The Blackmagic Cloud Store range includes three models: the main Cloud Store alongside the Mini and Pod – and it’s the first two that have big discounts.
Blackmagic Cloud Store is designed for production houses that need capacity for business and operational files as well as multimedia storage. The device is available in 20TB, 80TB and 320TB models, each with an M.2 NVMe connector SSD (opens in a new tab) in a flash RAID 5 configuration. According to the company, “the internal storage core is so fast that it can saturate 10G Ethernet ports to their theoretical maximum speed.”
The 20TB model drops from $9,595 to $7,595 (around £6,335 / AU$11,250), while the 80TB cloud store goes down to $22,995 (around £19,195 / AU$34,065).
Meanwhile, the portable Cloud Store Mini with 8TB capacity and four internal M.2 flash cards (opens in a new tab) in RAID (opens in a new tab) 0 memory configuration, it is geared towards TV production. Its price has been reduced from $2,995 to $2,355 (around £1,965 / AU$3,490).
Running on macOS and Windows, network storage syncs large files – including Blackmagic RAW 12K digital cinema files – to two of the best cloud storage (opens in a new tab) services there: google drive (opens in a new tab) AND dropbox (opens in a new tab). Although other providers are not supported. For future-proofing devices, users can expand their storage capabilities by upgrading as larger M.2 cards become available. There are also no subscriptions or licenses to set up, and users purchase a physical device right away.
“The new pricing will make high-performance network storage more affordable for anyone looking to globally distribute large media files in minutes,” said Blackmagic Design.
